One of the joys of owning a pet is watching it grow from a baby to an adult. This allows you to watch as their features and personality develop.
But as they grow, they need more resources and space. So, how big do Bearded Dragons get?
There are multiple things that can affect the size of a bearded dragon, including their sex, age, and diet. Generally, though, most fully-grown Bearded Dragons will be around 18 to 20 inches. They will weigh between 10 to 18 ounces (280 to 510 grams). It will take around 12 months for most Bearded Dragons to become fully grown.
|1 Month||3-4 inches|
|2 Months||5-9 inches|
|3 Months||8-11 inches|
|4 Months||9-12 inches|
|6 Months||11-18 inches|
|8 Months||13-20 inches|
|12 Months||16-22 inches|
This table is just a guide. There are many factors that can determine how large your Bearded Dragon will become. Let’s take a closer look at this issue.
Different Species Of Bearded Dragon
You should also be aware that there are multiple types of Bearded Dragons available. As we mentioned, the most common species is the Pogona Vitticeps. However, you might encounter some other types available. For example, you might have the Pogona Barbata. This will also grow to be around 18-24 inches.
There are also some miniature species that you can purchase. For example, the Pogona Microlepidota will only grow to be 4-6 inches. This can be a great alternative for buyers who might be intimidated by the large sizes of the Pogona Vitticeps.
When you are making the purchase, you should make sure to clarify the type of Bearded Dragon that you are buying. This will give you the assurance that you get the one you wanted. When you are buying from a pet store, they should be able to provide a lot of information about the breed and their requirements.
How The Environment Can Impact Growth
One of the most important elements that affects how big the Bearded Dragon will become is the type of environment that they were raised in. There are a few things that you need to know to make sure that you provide a great environment.
First, you should make sure that the Bearded Dragon has plenty of space. If they don’t get a big enough tank, they might experience stunted growth.
For this reason, you should monitor the tank size. If they start to get too cramped, the Bearded Dragon won’t be able to exercise properly, you might want to consider increasing the tank size. In most cases, you’ll be able to use a terrarium tank, available from most pet stores.
(I’ve written a guide here on how big a tank you should get for them as they get older.)
You should also make sure that the tank is set-up correctly. For example, you will need to use a UV light to heat the environment. This will make sure that the Bearded Dragon is kept healthy and happy in their new home. It will also allow them to absorb more calcium. This will ensure that their bones don’t become brittle and prevent them from becoming lethargic.
Another important environmental factor is the type of food that they are getting. If the Bearded Dragon isn’t getting the right food their growth might be stunted. To prevent this, make sure to present a balanced diet. You should also monitor the lizard. If it starts to grow fatter, reduce portion sizes. If it gets too thin, give it a little more food.
Don’t Let Young Bearded Dragons Brumate
You also need to monitor their behavior. In particular, you should make sure that they don’t brumate.
Brumation is more commonly known as hibernation. During this time, the lizard will sleep deeply. In order to conserve energy, they don’t eat much and tend not to move. Often, they will move into the hide or another dark place. Because of this, they often tend to lose a lot of weight.
In the wild, they brumate as a survival mechanism. Lizards are unable to regulate their internal temperatures. So, when it gets too cold, they shut down. It also makes it easier for them to deal with the lack of food that comes during winter.
For older Bearded Dragons, this is common, often occurring each winter. In most cases, they will start to brumate at between 10 months to 1 year old.
However, this should be avoided for younger Bearded Dragons. Because it reduces their need to eat and move, brumation at a young age should be avoided.
The best way to make sure that you can stop the brumation process at a young age is by controlling the amount of heat inside the tank, keeping it warm. You should also make sure to stick to a steady light cycle, providing between 10 to 12 hours of light every day. This will suppress the Bearded Dragon’s instincts to brumate.
Size Differences Between The Sexes
Finally, the sex of the Bearded Dragon might affect how big it will become. Males will typically be larger than females. Though this difference often will be relatively minor, sometimes only a few inches.
When they are younger, it can be difficult to tell the two sexes apart. In most cases, they won’t start to develop any significant difference until they are around 8-12 months old.
Despite this, there is a simple method that you can use to find out the gender. First, look at the section under the Bearded Dragon, near the tail. Be careful when doing this, as you don’t want to hurt your pet.
Where the tail meets the body you should spot a depressed slit. On males, there will be two horizontal ridges along the slit. On a female, there will be a single raised area around the tail. This dimple can resemble a triangular ridge.
In some cases, it might be difficult to spot these differences. As an alternative, you might want to try feeling around the base of the tail. Males will typically have a slightly thicker tail than females.
These tests can sometimes be very difficult, especially if you don’t quite understand what you are looking for. Thankfully, when you purchase the Bearded Dragon from a trusted seller, they will tell you whether the lizard is male or female.
